This will be supervisor meetings with Jacqui in greater detail than the production diary however, it is still part of the diary.
8th October: We went over my preliminary ideas for the project.
These were:
Individual Project:
The Vietcong monk.
Christmas tree POV film.
Photography – contrasting skin tones and lighting.
The intensity of a firefight.
Photography thing that Sam did in uni - some things at the media museum can be used.
The POV of a cat – capture the curiosity of a cat's mind.
Loading Room (726).
Story - The Space Battle
Three men in a massive space ship loading artillery for one of the many guns on the ship. They go through the battle the ship prevails but the three men die at the end. And the camera pans across other artillery loading rooms and most of them have died in some hideous ways.
Point: to personalise the deaths of millions of people in wars. WW2 in particular.
Issues: ambitious
Location: The Mill
This is the idea I decided to go with because it was the one that would stretch my abilities in filming, editing, and lighting mainly and partially my SFX skills.
Story – Christmas Tree
A man goes through the woods and chops down a tree then drives it in his car then has it chopped in half and finally it is shown to be a Christmas tree all this is from the POV of the tree.
Point: Subvert expectations
Issues: Not long enough
Jacqui mentioned that this could be a good backup if there is a lockdown and I cant finish my first film idea.
Story – Vietcong Guy
3 guys are writing a script for a film and struggling with one scene. They each in some way give their fully formed ideas for what could happen to this particular character. NEEDS TO HAVE A MEANING IN THE STORY.
Locations: could start in a house then move somewhere else
Point:
Issues: too many actors
Story – The Intensity of a firefight
5 guys in a battle
Point: something to do with valor/bravery/sacrifice
Issues: not a lot of scope
This had a lack of scope.
Story – Photography
Lighting effects on people creating B&W contrast on peoples skin
Story – Photography
Photographing actors dressed in clothing from different people from different times e.g. 20's gangster, 70' rock band member.
B&W
70’s
VHS
Digital
4K
This was the second choice for my project because it was ambitious and would allow me to improve my special effects skills.
15th October: Jacqui and I went over my pitch document and she showed me how to put together a schedule for my project using Google calendar and screen shooting each month. Then we went through my pitch document and in particular, we discussed my idea and how to condense it into a sentence. we managed to get ''Two men on a battleship in space get attacked and are forced to make an impossible choice''. also went over the audience section and reworded it from being a very specific audience e.g. only people who like war films and people who knew/know people who have been in war. This was changed to people who like sci-fi action films, who are 18-29.
22nd October: Today I met with Jacqui to go over a basic storyboard and get some help with the story development. she said she liked the opening and gave me some pointers on developing a story fully. she said to work backward from my ending to come up with a middle for the story. I then brought up the issue of the SFX and asked for any recommendations. she said to contact Chris about the stop motion room and use the spaceship model in there for my film. Finally, we discussed the progress presentation and are going to look over it next week.
29th October: We went over the steady cam use and the finalised story. I also took some test footage which I have linked via youtube underneath this post and is in my production folder.
I learned that the steady cam is very hard and time-consuming to set up and is used mainly for smooth shots while walking. also, that you will need a suitable counterbalance at the top and bottom of the steady cam pole. this is provided by two large batteries and a large camera. I enquired about using the Black magic with Mat Overton, however, he said it wasn't possible.
5th November: Go over the progress presentation. today in the meeting with Jacqui we went over my progress presentation. I did this by presenting the pitch to her and then planning on getting feedback for it and then work on that for Tuesday to actually give the presentation. after presenting to her she said that I had already done the presentation as you need to do it in front of your supervisor. so this was a relief so I could focus on the planning for my film.
12th November: Today I went over my storyboard for the film with Jacqui, as one of the main focuses of the project was my camera work so this was good to go over and get feedback on. as well as this we went over my idea for the one-point lighting that I got from a book on lighting in the film. Jacqui mentioned that I could
19th November: Today me a Jacqui went to the TV Studio to get some gels and look at it as a possible location alternative, turns out it was booked for the Vice-Chancellors meeting/interview. this meant that I needed a different location, we looked at the chroma key room but I am not adept enough with green screens to use it. there was also the photography studio that fit really well with the aesthetic of the film and was a great room for lighting.
26th November: Today was the day I was filming. so this meant that my meeting with Jacqui had to be quick.
3rd December: Today I made a lot of progress with my CGI with Peters's help. Jacqui liked what I had done and gave me some advice on design.
10th December: Today I did more CGI with Peter and talked about the scenes with Jacqui where she gave me more advice on design, especially for the enemy hip. to remove the wings and so it would look ominous.
17th December: Met before the break for Christmas and plans for CGI. I was going to add more texture to them and she agrees that that was necessary. also, to look at designs on the internet.
6th January: Met with Jacqui to quickly go through my progress that I was making and see if she had any improvements that I needed besides the texturing of the CGI.
